Slack tips for Mac users:
Extend Slack:
Slack integrates with a variety of apps to improve its core functionality – scheduling bots can schedule meetings, while other plug-ins may notify team members of important milestones in project management.
Stay in control of notifications:
From time to time you may wish to temporarily stop Slack alerts when attempting to focus on a job, or modify them to reduce distractions while still catching up on important information.
Choose a workspace, then Preferences > Notifications from the Slack menu. You may now customize your alerts to your preferences:
- There are no new messages.
- Keywords, direct messages, and mentions
- There are no alerts.
As another option, you may utilize the Do Not Disturb function (click your profile icon, choose Pause notifications, and enter a period) to give yourself some breathing room.
Remember that you may utilize Mac’s default Notifications manager in System Preferences.
Monitor specific words and phrases:
You may also access the Keywords item from Preferences > Notifications. Make good use of it. If you’re working on a project, you might configure the app to notify you whenever someone in any of your channels mentions the project code name (“large heart,” for example). Perhaps you have a customer connection that you take very seriously, in which case you might use that business name as a keyword. When that keyword is mentioned in any of your channels, you will be alerted.
Keep your hands on the keyboard:
On a Mac, use Option and the Up and Down arrows to move through all of those channels and messages. You won’t have to take your hands off the keyboard this way.
Clean those channels:
Unless they are starred, you can clear channels that have no unread activity. This may be accomplished by going to Preferences > Advanced and then selecting Hide any channels with no unread actions. You will still be able to see new messages if they occur on any channel.
